Introduction

Since 1986 the family is proud to have pioneered many appliance trends that we now take for granted in most kitchens and laundries in our homes. Many years ago, Mark Jones had a vision to create a company, modelled on successful family businesses around the world and centred around family, with family values at its heart, offering the best in European appliances that could pass from generation to generation.

Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) company policy refers to our responsibility toward our environment. Our company’s existence is not lonely. It’s part of a bigger system of people, values, products, other organisations and nature. The social responsibility of a business is to give back to the world just as it gives to us and for us being a family business, it is important that our business is sustainable to achieve our vision.

Sustainability Advisory Committee

To reflect our ambition of becoming a sustainable business, we have a committee who meet monthly with the goal of establishing our sustainability framework. The committee is made up of several personnel from different areas of our business who are passionate about supporting our sustainability journey.

Waste Management – Recycling / Refurbishing / Disposal

We are on a journey where we recycle or refurbish in as many parts of the business as possible.

Where customers have products that need servicing, we aim to try repair where we can.  We have trained service technicians who can repair a large range of categories and products.  Our technicians can be booked to aim to repair the product when it is not working as it should.  We have even invested in an Employer’s Gas License where we have trained service technicians who can install and service both electric and gas appliances, creating efficiencies for customers.

Appliances that can be repaired, reconditioned, or refurbished are either sold in our Kitchen Things outlet store or is made available for sale via Trade Me.

Appliances that are unable to be repaired, reconditioned, or refurbished are stripped of any useful parts for re-use in future reconditioned products, and relevant metal parts are re-used by our scrap metal partners.  As much cardboard, polystyrene, and waste is recycled or disposed off as efficiently as possible.

Current recycle and waste partners are:
Waste Management
Divert
National Steel

Caring for our team

People Safety
The Jones Family Business is committed to protecting the Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) of our people and we recognise that this commitment is an important part of how we work every day. We are committed to ensure the safe return of everyone who uses our premises, every single day.

Employee surveys
The Jones Family Business performs an employee satisfaction survey every 6 months and an employee wellbeing survey quarterly.  These surveys measure our employee’s satisfaction, engagement & wellbeing.  Our aim based on the results from these surveys is to improve how we work and function in a manner that ensures the well-being of our team.

Empowering our people for the future
Our people and culture are a huge component of our family business.  We want to empower our people for the future and hence have developed a “people roadmap” that not only includes training but also creates an improved culture and wellbeing. This roadmap helps to retain and grow our team.

Decarbonising our Fleet & Equipment

The Jones Family Businesses have embarked on a journey towards decarbonisation through the overhaul of our vehicle fleet. Recognising the pressing need to mitigate the environmental impact of our operations, we are investigating the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles investing in renewable energy sources for charging infrastructure and optimising route planning for maximum efficiency. Through this longer horizon effort, we are working towards a sustainable future for our family and yours.

Cooking Demo

Enriching consumers through our Cooking Technology Programme

At Kitchen Things we offer complimentary demonstrations on how to select the right appliances and then how to get the most out of them.  The ethos of this is that consumers can produce nutritious food for their families, limiting take-aways and wasteful food.  By learning to get the most out of the appliances, food can be cooked to offer the most nutritious value, food can be regenerated better, food can be stored more safely, last longer, and we even offer recipes to use “left overs” to avoid waste.  Our team of cooking technology experts are home cooks, who love cooking and making the most of everyday produce.

Energy Efficiency Appliances

We are committed to helping our customers save money and reduce their environmental footprint by offering a select range of appliances that are not only water efficient but also energy efficient.

Specialising in premium appliances, we work closely with our brand partners to source products that meet the needs of our New Zealand consumers, who are looking for more efficient products.

Our range of sustainable products, to name a few, includes refrigeration with very long shelf and freezer life, blast chillers that preserve food, gas cooktops with more efficient flame technology, induction cooktops with very efficient use & drying cabinets that care for specialised garments.

We offer specific products to developers looking for “green appliances” and as an example were involved as the official supplier of appliances in the Ockham Development that offered the first ever 10 Homestar rating.

Sustainability Policy – Smeg

SMEG Headquarters has been named one of the most innovative sites in Italy thanks to its intelligent consumption management and sustainable development policies. In 2007 it won the Modena Domotics Competition.

Smeg’s support for environmental sustainability and social responsibility can be seen in its Quality, Health, Safety & Environment (QHSE) policy, which fully complies with UNI EN ISO 9001, UNI EN ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards. These are all compatible with one another, enabling their easy integration into the three management systems.

UNI EN ISO 9001 – This is a standard which outlines the requirements for the adoption of an quality management system in order to help companies improve their production and management processes, ensure product quality and increase customer satisfaction.

UNI EN ISO 14001 This is a standard which outlines the requirements for the adoption of an environmental management system and provides guidelines that companies can follow when drafting corporate policy on eco-sustainability and pollution. The certification focuses on optimising the use of energy and natural resources and quality systems for waste disposal.

ISO 45001 certification shows that Smeg has voluntarily implemented a sound occupational health and safety management system.

Smeg also received a perfect score in a recent sustainability survey:

Eco-Friendly Products

High performance and low consumption are features of all Smeg ovens, hobs, dishwashers, rangehoods, and coffee machines. Special focus is placed on obtaining the highest energy efficiency class rating in order to help the environment and improve quality of life.

ASKO logo

ASKO factories have always had nature on their doorstep. Therefore, it is natural for them to preserve and protect our environment. They continuously strive to find the most environmentally friendly solutions and economical use of resources in the manufacturing of their products. By caring for our environment, they work to minimize the environmental impact of all our activities and products.

ASKO’s machines are among the most water and energy efficient on the market. In 2007 ASKO were proud to introduce the world’s first Swan labelled dishwasher in their range. The Swan label is the most well-known Nordic Ecolabel for health and environmentally friendly products, and a Swan label certifies that the certified products meet very strict and tough demands on environment and quality. In the US, their machines are recommended by Energy Star, an organization that helps consumers choose energy-efficient, good value and environmentally friendly products.
The ASKO factories also have an environmental certification in accordance with ISO 14001 which means that everything is done in as environmentally friendly way as possible.
An example of this is that all components in their appliances that weigh more than 50 grams are labelled for recycling.

Sustainability of supplier brands

As specialists in premium appliances, we continue working closely with our supply partners to ensure they are on a journey to be more sustainable.
